The Maldives' continued use of the
death penalty undermines government efforts and commitments to end gender-based
discrimination. The death penalty invites discriminatory sentences against
women for adultery and other crimes of sexual immorality, as well as for acting
as accomplices to murder committed by male counterparts. Capital punishment
promotes negative stereotypes about women and reinforces discriminatory gender
roles. The possibility of facing the death penalty also discourages human
rights defenders from civic engagement on a number of human rights issues,
including women's human rights.
