Tunisia’s Compliance with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights

As a State Party to the ICCPR, the Tunisian government has an obligation to guarantee
the enjoyment of certain basic rights regardless of a person’s race, color, sex, language,
religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status
(Article 2). Furthermore, the rights set out in the covenant must be guaranteed equally to
men and women (Article 3). The Tunisian government is obligated to treat all persons
equally before the law without any discrimination on any ground, including sex, (Article
26), and to protect all persons from hate crimes based on their identity (Article 20).
Finally, the ICCPR mandates that no person shall be subjected to torture or to cruel,
inhuman and degrading treatment or punishment (Article 7) or subjected to any form of
slavery (Article 8).
