Case summary:
AS, a university student in Nicaragua, became actively involved in the April 18, 2018 anti-government protests against the Ortega regime. He attended demonstrations, supported protest barricades, and openly expressed his opposition on social media. Following the protests, police and pro-government paramilitary groups began targeting student activists at his university by collecting their names, monitoring their activities, and issuing threats of imprisonment or death if they continued their opposition. AS and his partner were repeatedly harassed and surveilled by national police and pro-government actors. Officers came to AS’s home on multiple occasions looking for him, while threatening messages were sent through social media stating that authorities knew who they were and were watching them. Many of AS’s fellow students were detained or killed for their involvement in the protests. Fearing imprisonment and retaliation from the government, and with no protection available because the police themselves were responsible for the threats and surveillance, AS fled Nicaragua to seek safety.
