MN, a Ugandan democracy activist and supporter of the opposition People’s Power Party, was targeted by government authorities for her political advocacy against the ruling NRM party. She was arrested twice, including a 2016 detention during which security forces tortured and raped her. After she reported the assault, she and her father received repeated death threats and officials continued raiding her family home demanding the case be withdrawn. While in the U.S. on a J-1 exchange visa, authorities in Uganda continued to search for her and threaten her family, most recently in 2024, leaving her unable to safely return.
