Case Summary: Mr. P is ethnic Lisu and practices Christianity. After the military coup, Mr. P participated in the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM). Although he was not targeted for his participation, he knows that the military is tracking CDM students and fears he will be targeted in the future. Mr. P also fears that he will be forced to join the Burmese military if he returns. After coming to the U.S., military members came to Mr. P’s home looking for him. They accused his family of helping him escape, threatened to arrest his younger brother, and extorted the family. If Mr. P returns to Burma, he fears he will be tortured and killed if he refuses to join the military. Additionally, the Burmese government is targeting individuals who are ethnic Lisu and Christian. This increases the likelihood that Mr. P will be persecuted if he returns to Burma.
Theory of the Case: Fear of future persecution by government actors on account of political opinion, race, and religion.
Commitment: File I-589, gather evidence and testimony, appearances at USCIS; Work permit (initial and renewals)
Interview: Yes
Experience level/case team size recommended: Appropriate for any experience level and team size
