This report addresses the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s (Saudi Arabia’s) compliance with its obligations under the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW Convention) in the context of Saudi Arabia’s laws, policies, and customs concerning the death penalty. The report suggests questions for the Committee to raise with the Government of Saudi Arabia with respect to the death penalty and the effect of the death penalty on women, in particular.
Saudi Arabia is a signatory to the CEDAW Convention but is not a signatory to its Optional Protocol. Saudi Arabia also made a reservation to its ratification of the Convention in the event of conflict between the Convention and the “norms of Islamic law.”
