Minnesota Habeas Project Intake Internship

Location: In Person/Hybrid Only
The Advocates for Human Rights is part of the Minnesota Habeas Project, which has been seeking to find volunteer attorneys for habeas petitions for Minnesotans who have been taken into ICE custody and are in immigration detention across the country.We welcome undergraduate, graduate, and law school students to assist with intake, translation, research, and administration. Interns will conduct intake follow up, assist with intake interviews and case administration,conduct research, and translate documents.
Primary duties and responsibilities
- New client intake and follow-up
- Writing case summaries
- Client contact (initial screening calls, contacting family members, etc.)
- Administrative duties such as filing, copying, and maintaining data in our Legal Server case management system
- Legal and human rights conditions research
Experience and qualifications
- Excellent attention to detail with ability to manage and follow through on tasks
- Strong note taking skills with ability to synthesize notes into case histories and summaries
- Advanced writing skills to synthesize research
- Ability to work both independently and with a group
- Interest in refugees, immigrants, and other new arrivals to Minnesota Cultural competency and humility
- Preference for applicants with experience working with targeted populations
- Experience or familiarity with immigration law (preferred, for law students)
- Fluency in English and Spanish required
