Case Summary: Ms. R’s husband was a Venezuelan national guardsman. Around the elections, his colleagues and superiors told him that he had to go vote for the government. He responded that the right to vote is free and he would vote for whomever he wanted. He was also sent to break up meetings of opposition political parties, but he refused. His commander told him that he had to obey the government, but he argued that the guards were defenders of the people. One day, he asked for permission to do some business, but his commander started yelling at him. After a while, a colleague told him that they were recording him and had shouted at him to attempt to provoke him and send him to jail. When he refused to vote for the government, he was forced to watch government press conferences. He left his job on a Saturday. The following Monday, the captain came to his house to ask Ms. R where he was. He told Ms. R that if her husband did not go the police station and return to work, he would suffer the consequences. They then fled to the US.

Theory of the Case: Fear of future persecution by government actors on account of membership in a particular social group (family-based); Ms. R’s husband has a separate asylum claim based on fear of future persecution by government actors on account of political opinion.
