Case Summary: Ms. NU is an indigenous Shuar woman. When she was 9 years old, she was sexually assaulted by a man who worked for the mining company that was taking their land. When community leaders reported the actions being committed against the people by the mining company, the government just told them to move. She and her family were also forcibly displaced because of oil production on their land. 6 of her 9 siblings have fled to the United States. She has been outspoken about what the government and oil companies are doing, and she has participated in protests for equal rights and their land. Lastly, Ms. NU was denied admission to nursing school because of her race. When she applied after scoring high marks on her admission exam, she was told she was not being admitted because there were plans to open a nursing program in an indigenous region and she should go there instead.
