Case summary:

Ms. E lived in Guerrero, Mexico, with her partner, Mr. L. In September of 2020, the Michoacan Family, a gang, appeared in her town and attacked her and Mr. L. Ms. E was pregnant at the time. Over the next few months, the gang forced Ms. E to cook and work for them. The gang members raped her several times. They beat her, strangled her, and threatened to kill her if she left. The gang members also regularly insulted Ms. E. They also assaulted her partner, Mr. L, and forced him to work in the fields. Ms. E and Mr. L lived in an isolated community and did not feel they could trust the police to help because the police worked with the gangs. Ms. E tried to escape once but was caught by the gang and brought back. Eventually, Mr. L and Ms. E successfully escaped and fled to Baja California with their son, where they lived in hiding until they were able to journey to the U.S. in July 2023. Ms. E now lives in the U.S. with her son and Mr. L. Ms. E is afraid that the gang will kill her and her family if they return to Mexico.

Theory of the case: persecution on account of membership in a particular social group (women), political opinion (belief in equality of men and women), and on account of race (imputed) by private actors the government of Mexico is unable or unwilling to control; the pervasive influence of the gangs throughout Mexico makes relocation unreasonable.

Commitment: prepare evidence and testimony, supplement I-589, appearances in court; work permit. I-589 has already been filed pro se.
