Case #25-0071281

Initials & Country of Origin: N.K. from Syria

Type of Case: Affirmative Asylum
Language/interpretation needs: English
Date of Entry (and status, if any): 08/17/2024, F-1 student
Current Status/status expiry: F-1 student through ~05/13/2028; I-589 should be filed before Ms. K’s F-1 status expires

Case Summary: Ms. K and her family belong to Syria's Druze community. In 2014, her father, mother, and brother were taken hostage by an extremist group which is now in power in Syria. Her father was released after several days, but her mother and brother were held for two years. Now that this group is in power, they are persecuting Druze and other minority groups. Additionally, Ms. K's father is a political journalist and has received threats from the current government and its supporters. Some of these threats have involved Ms. K, with some saying they will sexually assault her if she returns to Syria. Ms. K believes the threats her family has received are motivated by their Druze identity and her father's political journalism. If Ms. K returns to Syria, she fears she would be detained at the border, imprisoned, and sexually abused and/or killed.
Theory of the Case: Past threats and fear of future persecution by government and non-government actors on account of religion, political opinion, and membership in a particular social group (family-based, etc.)
Commitment: File I-589, gather evidence and testimony, appearances at USCIS; Work permit (initial and renewals)

Interview: Yes

Experience level/case team size recommended: Appropriate for any experience level and team size
