Case Summary: Mr. G and his family are Kurdish and practice Alevi Islam. In Turkey, ethnic Turks would say their religion is “diseased” and call them “terrorists.” They were forbidden from practicing their religion in school, and their religious traditions were outlawed. Mr. G was arrested 4 times while celebrating the Nowruz holiday. When he was arrested, the police would severely beat him at the police station. In 2016, Mr. G moved from Istanbul to his hometown in southeast Turkey. After moving back, he continued to face threats from Turkish people. They would say things like, "We're going to burn you." In February 2023, Mr. G's hometown was affected by the earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria. After the earthquake, the police prioritized aiding ethnic Turks over ethnic Kurds, and Mr. G’s family only began receiving help about a month after the earthquake. Mr. G and his family left Turkey in September 2024.
