Case Summary: Mr. T and Ms. K are partners from Tibet. Mr. T was a Buddhist monk in a Tibetan monastery, until he was forced out of the monastery at age 18 by Chinese law. He stopped practicing Buddhism outside the house for fear of punishment by the government. Mr. T participated in a protest against the Chinese government as part of the 2008 Tibetan uprising. He was jailed, tortured, and interrogated by the Chinese military for a few days. After this, Chinese military tracked and surveilled him and his partner. Mr. T moved between Tibetan villages multiple times to avoid military encounter, while his partner stayed with her parents. The couple fled Tibet in May 2024. Since fleeing, government officials have come to Ms. K’s parents’ home weekly to interrogate them about the couple’s location.
