Case #25-0064949
Initials & Country of Origin: L.S. from Ukraine
Type of Case: Affirmative Asylum
Language/interpretation needs: Russian interpreter needed
Date of Entry (and status, if any): 05/03/2023; U4U Parole
Current Status/status expiry: U4U Parole through 05/01/2027; Ms. S’ asylum application should be filed prior to the expiration of her parole status. Note that parole has been under attack from the Trump administration and may be cancelled before its expiration date.
Case Summary: Ms. S and her husband are Pentecostals from the Luhansk region. Although Ms. S personally did not face issues before she left Ukraine, she heard that Russian-backed militias were taking away churches and persecuting believers in other towns. Ms. S left Ukraine in March 2022 and traveled through Poland and the Netherlands before arriving in the U.S. If she returns to Ukraine's occupied territories, she fears she will be targeted for her religious beliefs. She has heard that people have been imprisoned and beaten in prison for their faith. Ms. S believes she and her husband cannot relocate within Ukraine because they only speak Russian, and she has heard that non-Russophone Ukrainians have problems with Russian-speaking people. She says they say things like, "Speak Ukrainian," and "Go back to your Russia."
Theory of the Case: Fear of future persecution by non-government actors on account of religion and membership in a particular social group (Russophone Ukrainians)
Commitment: File I-589, gather evidence and testimony, appearances at USCIS; Work permit (initial and renewals)
Interview: Yes
Experience level/case team size recommended: Appropriate for any experience level and team size
