Case Summary: When she was 18, Ms. M was kidnapped by her uncles and taken to the bush for FGM. However, she was able to escape before they could perform FGM on her. After she escaped, she became an advocate against FGM and she would talk with teenage girls about how FGM was not a good practice. This angered the chiefs in her community, and she heard that people were looking for her. Around 2020-21, she started receiving threatening phone calls telling her that she better not show herself in public. This has been happening on and off for the past 4 years. Additionally, since 2022, Ms. M’s boyfriend has physically and verbally abused her, including threatening to kill her and insulting her for her blindness. If she returns to Liberia, she fears she will be forced to undergo FGM and/or be killed.
Theory of the Case: Fear of future persecution on account of political opinion and membership in a particular social group (gender-based violence)
Commitment: File I-589, prepare evidence and testimony, appearances at USCIS; Work permit (initial and renewals)
Interview: Yes
Experience level/case team size recommended: Appropriate for any experience level and team size
