Refugee and Immigrant Program - Hub Activity Internship

The Advocates for Human Rights is collaborating with other immigration legal services providers on a new initiative to increase access to legal services in Minnesota. The “Hub” started in February 2024 and has several objectives including increasing legal access points and community education and outreach. As part of our participation in the “Hub,” interns will have the opportunity to engage in pro se legal clinics, outreach events, and work directly with clients and other partner organizations as we continue to develop and implement ways to more effectively and efficiently provide immigration legal services in Minnesota. The Refugee and Immigrant Program welcomes undergraduate or law students to assist with client intake, research, and administrative duties.
Primary duties and responsibilities
May include:
- Conducting intakes for potential clients
- Conducting in-depth asylum screenings and drafting case summaries
- Assisting with the preparation of pro se immigration applications and forms under the supervision of a licensed attorney
- Researching country conditions information
- Administrative duties such as filing, copying, mailing, and maintaining data in our Legal Server case management system
- Support for in-person clinic events (*)
*These events are not mandatory. Interns can work with their supervisor to determine their level of comfort participating in in-person client meetings or events.
Experience and qualifications
- Proficiency in Spanish (REQUIRED)
- EXTREME attention to detail with ability to manage and follow through on tasks
- Strong note taking skills with ability to synthesize notes into case histories and summaries
- Advanced writing skills to synthesize country condition research
- Ability to work both independently and with a group
- Interest in refugees, immigrants, and other new arrivals to Minnesota
- Sensitivity to diverse cultures
- Fluency in English
- Experience or familiarity with immigration law (preferred for law students)
