This virtual CLE session will provide an overview of the World Day theme--The Death Penalty Protects No One--and its relevance to the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights, including an exciting announcement regarding The Advocates' work with the African Court.

  • Speaker: Amy Bergquist, The Advocates for Human Rights 

  • Overview of the World Day theme--The Death Penalty Protects No One--and its relevance to the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights, including an announcement regarding The Advocates' advocacy with the African Court  


12:10 PM - 12:30 PM | Keynote Presentation: "Advisory Opinions, Amicus Briefs, and the African Court: Process and Impact" 

  • Speaker: Tito Magoti, Legal and Human Rights Centre  

  • A detailed discussion on the African Court, including the role of advisory opinions and amicus briefs, and how the Court assesses compatibility with the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights. 


12:30 PM - 12:45 PM | Presentation: "Key Arguments with the African Court: Because the Death Penalty Protects No One, it is an arbitrary violation of the right to life under the African Charter" 

  • Speaker: Chris Hart, Foley Hoag 

  • Highlighting The Advocates' main arguments demonstrating that the death penalty violates the African Charter because it has no unique deterrent effect.

  • Open floor for attendees to ask questions to speakers regarding the amicus brief process, the African Court, and the death penalty in Africa.
