Case Summary:
M is a 16 year old from Lofa, Liberia where she grew up with her mother until she was 12. Her mother died from unknown health complications. Her father passed away when she was very young and she doesn’t know anything about him. After her mother’s death, she went to live with her older sister. She and her sister got along well and lived with her sister’s husband and several others. She was never exposed to alcohol or drug use in the home and never faced punishment. She, however, never went to school and has never worked. Besides the assault, she and her family have never experienced violence or discrimination. After she turned 15, she was kidnapped by people for three days because they wanted to carry out FGM on her. She ran away but had to leave quickly, in fear of her safety, so she fled after taking money from her sister’s cot to flee her country. She was afraid that these people would return and find her to try the same thing again. She doesn’t recall how much money she took from her sister’s, but it was enough to use for her trip to the US. She flew from Liberia to Senegal and took several bus rides through countries she doesn’t recall. She passed through Tapachula, Mexico, and made the whole trip by herself.
Summary of Asylum Claim: Gender based PSG
Theory of the SIJS case: SIJS based on abandonment by her father and mother.
Commitment: Asylum; SIJS – review predicate order, file SIJS application; Removal – terminate court proceedings
