D and E fear a gang who finds businesses and extorts or disappears owners if they do not pay them a quota to run their businesses. Their mother had a business in Guerrero. When their mother could not pay the quota or extortion fee to run her business around July 2022, she was abducted. Before she disappeared, there were several other disappearances of people they knew, and people were also killed. D never experienced harm or threats while living in Petaplan and didn’t know if her mother received any threats prior to her disappearance. E however received a threatening message on her old phone number that said if she returned to Mexico, the gang would kill her. The people who abducted their mother were threatening to find her. E believes that the people who abducted her mom were connected to drug traffickers (narcos). Their mom was released after 3-4 months because she paid the extortion fee. Her mother was told they would kill her daughters. One of their aunts was also abducted for a short time, beaten, and then released. The incidents happened in July of 2023. E and D fear that the same organization that abducted their mom will harm them, and D is also worried about her child. D tried to report the extortion to the police and made a complaint, but they didn’t do anything and did not try to find their mom.
